Goals:
The following list of course goals will be addressed in Quilt Quasars. Each goal relates directly to a performance objective, and an activity.
1. design tessellation tiles using graphics package(s)
2. experiment with tessellation patterns
3. experiment with color, shading, and textures in graphic package
4. select various fabric swatches for trial designs
5. test fabric tessellations on flannel board
6. make tessellation templates, allowing for ¼" seam allowance
7. cut and sew fabric selections to achieve small quilt suitable for hanging
8. foster development of creativity through original designsTopic: "Tessellations into Fabric Art"
Before you begin:
Planet Earth and Paper Planet may offer more information.
Ability to use hand cutting and sewing tools and/or sewing machine.
Some knowledge of quilting techniques would be helpful.
Directions for Quilt QuasarsFabric Art:
Resources include several books on M. C. Escher, patterns, quilting, tilings, math, and others.
A video on M. C. Escher, his life and work is also available.
Web sites associated with tessellations are bookmarked.
Additional sites (suggested by students as a result of searches) will be made available to everyone.
What's in it for me?
In reviewing resources associated with tessellations in quilting, identify three quilt artists and their works. Determine the tile used in each quilt. Make a small sketch, using one of the tiles, use different variations of color to see the effects. You may wish to make sketches or take digital photographs of your favorite designs or findings. You may wish to refer to this material later when designing your finished product.
Activities: It is recommended that you print out the directions for Quilt Quasars so that you will have them as you work with the Electric Quilt software.
Associated Assignments:
1. The student will maintain a log/sketchbook.
2. The student will view interactive video for information and fostering creativity.
3. The student will experiment with the graphics software for practice in designing and manipulating tiles.
4. The student will participate with peers for suggestions, assistance, and review of accomplishments.What you'll need:
