Quilt Quasars: Directions and Activities

Electric Quilt Activity 1:  

  • You should print these directions before leaving the module to work in Electric Quilt.

  • You may select the print button on your browser or download the instructions as a MS Word document.

Click on the EQ desktop icon.
Choose create in the popup window.
Use your name for the first project—new quilt.

Click on Quilt, then click new quilt.
Select a block layout from the menu given. There are 6 choices: horizontal, on-point, variable point, baby blocks, variable blocks, country set.

In the tabs at the bottom of the quilt, click on layout.
Chose the number and size of blocks, make sure the sashing is set to 0. Close (x). If you change your mind, click. one of the layer tabs, then click back to layout tab.

Click on Libraries, choose block library.
Select EQ libraries.
Double click on 1 Classic period.
Click on 8-point stars.
Select Love in a Mist—titles come up as mouseovers, this is a red, white and blue block.
Click on copy--This gives you a block format to work on. It is saved in the sketchbook.
Chose two more blocks to copy into the sketchbook.
Click close.

Click on the sketchbook icon (the one with the glasses) to open and see the blocks you selected.

Click on blocks tab in the sketchbook.
Click on one block that you would like to work with.
Click edit at the bottom of the notebook page.

Your plain block will show up on the block worktable.

Click the color tab at the bottom of the page.
Select colors and fabrics of your choice: click on a color or fabric square in the Fabrics and Colors palette, then click on the piece in the block that you want to color.

Save what you like in the sketchbook by clicking on the notebook icon (this is the one below the notebook with glasses).
Try another coloring. Be sure to save.
Click on view, then sketchbook.
By clicking on the four arrows at the bottom of the notebook page you can choose the coloring of the block that you want to work with.
X to close.
Click on worktable in menu bar
Choose work on quilt
Click on layer 1.
Click on the set tool. (First button below the arrow.) The arrow changes to a square with a diamond in the middle. Your block comes up.
Click on the empty blocks in the quilt layout to make a tessellation quilt design.
Save in sketchbook.
Click on sketchbook with glasses to see your quilt, click on Quilts tab.

  •   Experiment with other layouts, blocks, and colors.
