Overview:
Fifth grade students will create
survey questions, and survey their classmates and then record their results in a
secured page in Microsoft Word.
They will then record the data in Microsoft
Excel. The students will then create a chart, table, or graph in Excel and
then email the instructor each document as an attachment. I based my lesson by
following the structure of the NTeQ model lesson components. The students will
be graded by a rubric based on collaborative work
skills.
NTeQ Lesson Components:
Specify
Objectives:
- Students will work
cooperatively to create a survey question
- Students will work
cooperatively to survey classmates and record findings using tally marks
- Students will use Microsoft
Word to enter their data in a table
- Students will use Microsoft
Excel to use their data and create a chart, table, or graph
- Students will print their
documents
Data
Manipulations:
- The learner will use a
variety of technologies to access, analyze, interpret, apply, and
communicate information.
Activities Prior to Computer:
- Discuss types of graphs and
purposes of each
- Demonstrate how to conduct a
survey, gather data, and make tables
- Divide students into smalls
groups to come up with a survey of their interest
- Conduct the survey and make
a table
- Decide on the particular
graph to use
- Share feedback to class
Supporting Activities:
- The students will learn how
to conduct surveys
- Communication techniques and
skills
- Transforming data into table
or graph format
Evaluation:
- Check students print out to
see if directions were followed correctly
- Rubric on performance
standards
In relation with Tomei’s
taxonomy, my lesson falls under the Literacy and Collaboration tier. With the
students interacting with each other for to complete the different survey
questions and then integrating their findings with technology, I feel that the
two tiers listed from Tomei’s taxonomy is suitable.
