TE 600: Development of Instructional Materials
Summer I, 2005

Gayle Neldon, MS, CCC/A

I am a certified audiologist and the Hearing Clinic Coordinator in the WVU Department of Speech Pathology & Audiology. I am also a Technology Education doctoral student at WVU.

I became interested in Technology Education a few years ago when I began integrating technologies into my clinical supervision. After participating in Trek-21, where I learned ways to integrate teaching technologies into my classroom, I decided I wanted to pursue this further. I have three courses remaining to take, and anticipate taking my comprehensive finals in May, 2006. I am considering investigating technologies for clinical supervision for my dissertation research.

The Learners

The projects I have designed in TE 600 have been targeted to an undergraduate audiology course I teach, SPA 440: Audiological Assessment. This class averages 45 Speech Pathology & Audiology majors in their senior year. Near the end of the fall semester when the course is taught, they are making application to graduate school in either speech-language pathology or audiology. In the past, students have made career decisions based on this course - they decide they either love audiology, or not, here.

At this point, these learners have been in school for at least 16 years. They are highly motivated to do well, earn good grades, and determine their futures as best they can. They want to know more about audiology so they can make informed career decisions. They want to keep a high grade point average to increase their chances of getting into the graduate program of their choice. They want learning to be fun and definitely do not want to be bored. The challenge to the instructor is to make the sometimes difficult content as understandable and interesting as possible while not losing those learners who are just not interested in the material.
